Chippendale Period Mahogany Centre Table

18th century
Description

A George III Chippendale period mahogany centre table; the well figured top above a plain freize and raised on square chamfered legs with C scroll brackets to the corners.

I love the clean simple design of this Chippendale centre table. The table is finished all the way around so it can either be placed against a wall or be freestanding. It is the ideal size for a small hall way or up against the arm of a sofa.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century England and named after cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, this style bridges Rococo, Gothic, and Chinese influences, often featuring rich mahogany construction, straight or cabriole legs, and understated carved details such as corner spandrels.

Cuban and West Indian mahogany were the primary hardwoods favoured during this era due to their durability, dense grain, and deep reddish-brown colour, often joined using traditional mortise-and-tenon craftsmanship.

Authentic 18th-century pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks, original wooden corner brackets, asymmetric grain patterns from hand-planing, and natural patination on unexposed underside wood.

A Chippendale mahogany table serves as a functional focal point in an entry hall or living area, balancing contemporary neutral upholstery and modern artwork with structured historical woodwork.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
