Italian Brescia-type Flintlock Holster Pistol Decorated with Brass Furniture, Circa 1780–1800

18th century
Description

A good original example of a Continental flintlock holster pistol, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, circa 1780–1800.

The pistol is of typical Mediterranean form and retains its decorative brass furniture including a repoussé brass butt cap and engraved side plates. The walnut stock is attractively inlaid with white-metal wire scrollwork and fitted with a brass escutcheon to the grip. The flintlock mechanism shows light foliate engraving and remains complete, with the cock retaining a decorative inlaid panel.

The barrel measures approximately 7 inches and the pistol has an overall length of about 48 cm. Pistols of this style are commonly associated with the Brescia region of Northern Italy and were produced for civilian or officer purchase during the late flintlock period.

An attractive and well-decorated example with good display presence.

Condition Report:

• Lock cocks but does not always fire reliably and may require adjustment

• Crack present to the wrist of the stock

• Crack visible to the cock (hammer)

• Age-related wear and patina consistent with period use

• Ramrod present but may be a later replacement

Measurements:

• Overall Length: 48 cm

• Barrel Length: 7 inches

Please note:

This item is sold as a historical antique. All photographs form part of the description and condition.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Brescia-type flintlock holster pistols are late 17th to late 18th-century European firearms produced in or influenced by the armoury workshops of Brescia, Italy. They were designed with long barrels and large calibres to be carried in horse-saddle holsters for cavalry or personal defense.

These pistols typically feature dense walnut or fruitwood stocks, hand-forged steel barrels and lock mechanisms, and decorative furniture made from cast brass, silver, or iron. Wire inlay in scroll or floral patterns was frequently used to embellish the wooden stock.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved wood stocks, period-correct flintlock mechanisms with swan-neck cocks, and hand-fitted brass or silver mounts. Look for maker marks on the lock plate or barrel, as well as natural oxidisation and uneven wear patterns on the metal components.

Pistols of this era are frequently mounted inside custom velvet-lined shadow boxes or placed on acrylic display stands on bookshelves, mantlepieces, or desk tops. They integrate well into traditional studies, libraries, and dark academia aesthetics.

Store the item in a climate-controlled environment with low humidity to prevent rust and wood warping. Apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to metal and wooden surfaces using a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive polishes.
