For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A handsome 18th-century bleached oak chest on chest, dating to around 1770.

The upper section is crowned with a dentil moulded cornice.

The oak has been bleached to a soft, natural raw finish, highlighting the attractive grain throughout and giving the chest a light, contemporary feel while retaining its period character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a timber storage furniture piece consisting of two separate stacked chests of drawers. Originating in the late 17th century and gaining prominence during the 18th century, the design maximises vertical storage without occupying excessive floor area.

They were constructed primarily using solid hardwoods such as English oak, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring pine or oak secondary linings for drawer interiors and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature construction split into two distinct upper and lower sections for transport, hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, irregular hand-sawn backboards, and period-appropriate cast brass handles or escutcheons.

A bleached oak finish softens classical proportions, making the item compatible with neutral, Scandinavian, or modern country design schemes. Place it as a tall focal point in a master suite, hallway, or dressing room alongside modern artwork and neutral textiles.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral, non-silicone beeswax sparingly along the wood grain to preserve the finish. Avoid positioning the piece near direct heat sources or in high-humidity areas to prevent timber movement.
