French Enamel Carriage Clock 1890s

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a 1890s French carriage clock; the clock case and movement have been fully restored, ultrasonically cleaned, and the movement re-built, oiled run and tested, and the platform escapement fully cleaned and serviced, so a few hundred pounds saved against a cheaper clock.

This is a genuine French cloisonné enamel carriage clock not a modern reproduction or China copy if you are looking for one of those, there are plenty on EBay to choose from.

The Case

The case is in the Art Nouveau style in solid brass and stands 20cm high x 10cm wide with a depth of 8.5cm it is in perfect condition with mint enamel panels and dial mask.

This case has the enamel sides and dial plate.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition, enamel inlay with Roman numerals and housed in a shiny solid thick brass plate covered in enamel simply beautiful and in great original condition this clock would have cost a small fortune when new. A lot of work has gone into the dial plate it is a real work of art., the clock also retains the original gilt spade hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day Repeater so strikes the hours and halves, the movement has been fully ultrasonic cleaned, new springs added then all hand polished, serviced and oiled so keeping good time over the eight days via the restored escapement.

Overall, a very beautiful quality carriage clock by a quality French maker that looks stunning on display and contains all its original features this is quite a rare find these days.

The clock comes with a winding key.

A French carriage clock is a small, portable spring-driven timepiece developed in France during the early nineteenth century. Designed primarily for travel, these clocks traditionally feature a rectangular brass case, clear glass viewing panels, and a top carrying handle.

Historical carriage clocks were typically manufactured using cast or polished brass cases, bevelled glass panels, and mechanical brass movements. Decorative variations incorporated champleve or cloisonne enamel work, porcelain side panels, and silvered or gilded finishes.

Authentic nineteenth-century French carriage clocks generally display maker stamps or serial numbers on the rear movement plate, such as marks from established Parisian horologists. They feature hand-cut gears, heavy brass casing, escapement platforms visible through a top glass window, and traditional winding mechanisms rather than modern battery compartments.

A carriage clock can be placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, styled atop a stacked pile of art books on a coffee table, or positioned on a study desk. Its compact scale and metal finish allow it to complement both traditional and modern eclectic interiors as a functional decorative object.

Keep the clock in a dry environment with a stable temperature to prevent oxidisation of the brass and cracking of the enamel. Dust the exterior gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid liquid chemical polishes near the enamel panels, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
