Description

Hi

I have for sale a French striking and repeating carriage with alarm function made in France around 1880;s in rare case as it has the fretwork on the sides to match the dial and the side glass and it is simply stunning to look at, striking on a gong having been fully serviced.

This is one small but heavy clock built to top spec and a must for the best of collections a very rare case not often seen for sale, with the solid handle also.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny gilt and stands 15cm high x 7.5cm wide with a depth of 7.5cm it is in perfect condition with mint thick 3mm bevelled sides/front/ and top viewing glass.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition with a silvered chapter ring, the dial is set in a stunning gilded fretwork mask which sets this clock apart from others, the clock has very fine original black spade hands,

with the bold but fine Arabic numerals.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours via a small sweet gong to the rear and also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been serviced and oiled so keeping a great time over the eight days and has the bonus of the original silvered platform escapement.

The movement has been fully serviced and is running very strong.

The movement contains Geneva stop work to save over winding only found on the best of the best.

Overall a very beautiful quality carriage clock by a top quality French maker that looks stunning on display and contains all of its original features this is quite a rare find these days.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Carriage clocks were created in France during the early nineteenth century to provide reliable, portable timekeeping for travellers. Repeating mechanisms allowed users to sound the current hour or quarter-hour on demand by pressing a top plunger, which was particularly useful in dark rooms prior to electric lighting.

These timepieces were predominantly constructed using heavy cast brass cases, often finished with gilt or polished surface treatments. The interior houses spring-driven mechanical movements, balance wheel escapements, bevelled glass viewing panels, and fired enamel dials with painted numerals.

Authentic examples feature heavy, solid brass construction, bevelled thick glass panels, and hand-finished mechanical movements often stamped with French maker marks or serial numbers. Look for functional repeating mechanisms, pinned dial assemblies, and evidence of genuine historic wear to the gilding rather than modern artificial distressing.

A brass carriage clock serves as a refined focal point when placed atop a wooden mantelpiece, a curated bookshelf, or a executive writing desk. Pairing polished metal horology with contemporary minimalist textures or traditional dark wood furniture creates balanced visual contrast.

Clean external brass surfaces using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent the accumulation of dust and finger oils, avoiding abrasive chemical polishes that strip original lacquers. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a professional horologist to clean, oil, and balance the internal gearing.
