19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a walnut/nut wood and gilded mantle clock made in France around 1890-1920s in very good original condition.

The Case

The case is in solid walnut and stands 40cm high x 20cm wide with a depth of 16cm it is in very good original condition very well looked after and has been waxed regularly over its life time , standing on gilded feet and the dial covered in a convex glass brass bezel.

The Dial

The dial is porcelain with the Roman numerals, with the black spade type hands which are all original to this very old clock.

The dial is signed by the retailer.

The Movement

The movement is an eight day time and strike , it strikes the halves and on the hour , the clock runs for eight days, via a pendulum.

The clock runs fine and the original key is present.

Overall a beautiful mantle clock that looks great on display keeping good time and looking even better. The photos do not do justice to this beautiful old clock.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Rococo style clocks, prominent during the reign of Louis XV and revived in the late nineteenth century, are characterised by asymmetrical curves, leafy acanthus scrollwork, and rich shell-like decorative elements known as rocaille.

These timepieces typically feature timber or brass cases embellished with tortoiseshell or lacquer work, decorated with cast ormolu or brass mounts, and finished with fired white enamel dials displaying hand-painted numerals.

Authentic pieces often feature maker marks stamped onto the movement backplate or dial, finely chased cast gilt mounts, double-train mechanical movements, and hand-painted enamel dials rather than printed modern paper faces.

A Rococo style mantel clock serves as a strong focal point when displayed atop a minimalist fireplace mantelpiece, marble console table, or dark wood sideboard, bridging classical craftsmanship with contemporary design schemes.

Dust the case regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes on gilt mounts or lacquered surfaces, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist every few years.
