Very Early C1700 Giltwood Oval Mirror.

Description

Incredibly early English carved giltwood mirror dating from 1700.

Frame carved from oak and retaining it's original gesso and water-gilding.

Alternating leaf, flower and berry foliage carving, all very well executed.

Later mirror plate with only very light foxing, later backing board, (both not recent replacements.)

Construction peg joints can be seen on rear of frame.

Late 17th and early 18th-century giltwood mirrors feature deeply carved timber frames decorated with foliate motifs, acanthus leaves, and scrollwork typical of the Baroque period. The surfaces were meticulously finished with gold leaf applied over gesso preparations.

Craftsmen carved the structural frames from timber before applying multiple coats of gesso and bole. Gold leaf was then applied using water-gilding techniques, followed by selective burnishing to create highlights and depth.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved joinery marks, age-related wear showing red bole or white gesso through the gilding, and original mercury or early plate glass with natural oxidisation and distortion.
