19th Century English Regency Rosewood Centre Table

19th century
Description

19th Century English Regency Rosewood Centre Table

A 19th Century English Regency Rosewood Centre Table, Probably by William Trotter of Edinburgh.

This circular centre table has a tilt top mechanism allowing it to stand at the side of a room when not in use. The top is veneered in beautifully figured bookmatched rosewood and it has finely carved winged scroll feet and conforming trusses above on the base, surrounded by gadrooning. The top of the table is widely crossbanded in coromandel.

The carving on this table suggests that it was made in Edinburgh by William Trotter, Gillows' leading competitor in the north of Britain at the time. Pieces by Trotter were supplied to many important houses and families and the quality of his work is always very high.

This is a lovely table that stands beautifully and is very elegant.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, Regency centre tables were designed to stand in the middle of a room, featuring finished woodwork on all sides and frequently incorporating tilt-top mechanisms to create space when not in use.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period favoured Brazilian rosewood for its rich figure, accentuating the timber with decorative crossbanded borders, contrasting wood veneers, and carved pedestal bases fitted with brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, original brass tilt-latch hardware, cast brass castors, and period-correct veneer construction laid over solid oak or pine substrate cores.

A Regency centre table serves as a focal point positioned in a central entrance hall or foyer, or functions as a round dining table in a modern dining room.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent fading and movement in the veneer, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply natural beeswax sparingly to maintain the patinated finish.
