Antique Edwardian Mahogany Metamorphic Writing Table C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A compact Edwardian mahogany writing table with satinwood crossbanding and boxwood stringing, the top opening to reveal a smoothly rising writing slope, lifted automatically into place by the patented metamorphic action as the leaves are raised.

The leather writing slope further lifts to reveal a spacious storage area beneath, with additional compartmentalised storage to the rear.

An original ivorine plaque indicates the piece was retailed by Finnigans, noted outfitters of luxury goods and travelling accessories for wealthy clients. To the rear a brass plaque denotes “PATS. 1631 & 5466”, the patent reference to the pop-up rise and fall mechanism.

Very good antique condition, with a gentle patina and some wear to the leather writing surface consistent with age and use. Below, an additional pull-out storage compartment with a leather-covered lid, with age-related wear to the interior, retained in original condition. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1900.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A metamorphic writing table is a piece of furniture featuring adjustable or dual-purpose mechanisms, such as hinged leaves, concealed compartments, or folding writing slopes. Originating in the 18th century and refined during the Edwardian period, these tables allowed multi-functional usage in compact living spaces.

Edwardian writing tables were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, satinwood, or walnut, often decorated with delicate marquetry or crossbanded veneers. Writing surfaces frequently incorporated inset gold-tooled leather, accompanied by solid brass hinges and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic Edwardian tables typically feature clean lines, fine proportions, and slender, square-tapered or turned legs. Examination of drawer dovetails, hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware, and natural timber wear helps confirm period authenticity.

A metamorphic writing desk functions effectively as a compact hallway console, a dedicated reading nook surface, or a focal piece in a home office. Opening the side leaves allows the display of stationery, desk accessories, or small ceramics without compromising spatial efficiency.

Maintain mahogany timber by applying a high-quality beeswax paste twice a year along the grain and buffing lightly. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping, veneer lifting, or leather shrinkage.
