Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian games tables were popular multi-functional items in 19th-century drawing rooms, designed for leisure activities such as chess, draughts, and cards. They frequently feature highly figured burr walnut veneers, intricate marquetry or inlay work, turned pedestals, and concealed storage drawers or work baskets underneath.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilized rich hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. The playing surfaces often incorporated contrasting timber inlays like boxwood, ebony, and fruitwood to form chessboard squares, set atop solid pine or oak carcases.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on drawers, natural timber shrinkage along joints, brass castors attached to turned legs, and original lock mechanisms. The underside of the table often reveals unpolished Secondary timber like pine or oak.

An antique games table serves as an effective occasional accent piece when placed in a reading nook, bay window, or formal living area. Positioned alongside a pair of armchair seats, it functions both as a decorative focus and a usable board for modern gaming.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, following the direction of the grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct sunlight to prevent veneer drying or bleaching.
