A Summer's Day on the Cote D'azur, Ca 1947, a Sun Drenched Mediterranean Street Scene, the South of France, Colourist French Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

This sunny street scene captures all the warmth and light of a summer's day in the South of France. Painted with a vibrant, touch, Louis Myr masterfully employs a palette of soft lavenders, ochres, and Mediterranean blues to evoke the hazy, shimmering heat of a Provencal afternoon.

The composition leads the eye past palm trees and bustling figures toward a sun-baked townscape in the distance. Myr’s use of light is particularly striking; the long, cool shadows stretching across the foreground provide a sophisticated contrast to the brilliant, impasto-rich highlights on the architecture and foliage.

Louis-Marcel Féraud Myr (1893-1964) initially studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He then completed his education at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. From the 1930s onwards, he regularly exhibited at both the Salon des Tuileries and at the Salon des Independants. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was a major collector of Louis Myr's paintings and engravings.

Our oil on canvas by Myr dates from the 1940s and is signed at the lower right. Measuring 46 x 55 cm for the canvas alone, the overall size in an elegant frame is 59 x 69 cm.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Colourist paintings from this era prioritize atmospheric light and vibrant tonal harmonies over exact geometric realism. Artists working in the South of France frequently employed loose brushwork and saturated palettes to capture the distinct light of the Mediterranean coast.

Paintings from this era were typically executed using oil-based pigments bound with linseed oil on woven flax canvas. The canvas was stretched over wooden stretcher bars and treated with a gesso primer before paint application.

Authentic works from this period show age-appropriate canvas oxidation on the reverse, natural paint surface craquelure, and period-correct brushwork. They frequently bear artist signatures, gallery labels, or inventory marks on the canvas or stretcher frame.

Position the canvas against a neutral backdrop, such as off-white or light plaster walls, to highlight its colour palette. It pairs well with natural materials like timber, linen, and terracotta in contemporary, coastal, or mid-century settings.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent fading and canvas warping. Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical treatments.
