Antique Victorian Satinwood Lyre-back Elbow Chair C.1890

19th century
Description

A late Victorian satinwood lyre-back elbow chair, the back formed with a shaped top rail, pierced splat and fine line-inlaid detailing, above shaped arms and ring-turned legs united by stretchers. The central section to the back is beautifully inlaid with an engraved bone figure of a classical winged putto.

A practical and particularly decorative occasional chair, well suited to a bedroom, dressing room or hallway. Its elbow form, upholstered seat and proportions also make it suitable as a desk chair for light use.

Very good antique condition with only minor surface wear consistent with age. The upholstery is clean and serviceable. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1890.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lyre-back chair features a central backrest splat shaped in the form of a classical lyre instrument, a classical revival motif widely used throughout nineteenth-century furniture making.

Victorian satinwood furniture typically utilised satinwood timber valued for its light golden tone and smooth grain, frequently combined with hand-carved joinery, painted painted motifs, and upholstered drop-in seats.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, hand-turned leg detailing, classical painted or marquetry embellishments, and original surface patination across light timber surfaces.

Position a satinwood elbow chair beside a writing desk, in an entryway, or as an accent seating option paired with contemporary neutral upholstery to highlight the timber silhouette.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid timber shrinkage, dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, and apply clear beeswax once a year to preserve the finish.
