Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh dresser with a belly rack features shaped, outward-curving sides on the upper shelf portion. This anatomical moulding, characteristic of 18th-century regional joinery, provided visual elegance while accommodating larger plates and platters on the lower display shelves.

18th-century Welsh dressers were primarily constructed from solid native hardwoods, most notably English or Welsh oak. Secondary woods like pine or fruitwood were often used for drawer linings and backboards, while brass was the standard material for drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, wooden peg construction rather than modern screws, and natural shrinkage or unevenness in wide timber panels over time.

In modern interiors, open shelves can be curated with neutral earthenware, contemporary ceramics, or glassware to contrast against the dark timber. Placing the dresser in a kitchen, dining room, or wide hallway anchors the space with historical character while providing functional storage.

Maintain historic oak by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to prevent timber movement and cracking.
