Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small table with drawers created during the 18th century, designed primarily during the reign of King George III. Typically featuring a long top drawer over two or three deeper side drawers, it served as a dressing table or occasional side desk in British homes.

Georgian lowboys were constructed using primary timbers such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often finished with brass backplates and drop handles. Secondary timbers like pine or oak were used for drawer linings and internal framing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn drawer linings showing uneven tool marks, and natural patination on the timber. Look for original brassware, hand-carved details on the apron or cabriole legs, and signs of shrinkage on solid wood tops.

A lowboy works well as an entryway console table, a compact bedroom dressing table, or an occasional side desk in a living area. Pair it with contemporary lamps or modern artwork to create a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and current design.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or timber fading.
