Early 18th Century George I Period Walnut Lowboy Side Table, C1720

18th century
Description

Charming Early 18th-Century Walnut Lowboy Side Table with Great Patina

A delightful early 18th-century George I walnut lowboy side table, circa 1720, of small, elegant proportions and with a superb rich colour and patina. The table features a solid two plank walnut top with beautiful grain and depth of tone, above a single working drawer. The drawer front is fitted with period solid brass shaped handles. Standing on finely turned bulbous legs, united by the original stretchers and terminating in turned feet, this piece retains its original top, rear backboard, legs and stretchers. The frame is traditionally made using mortise and tenon joints secured with pegs, as you would expect of the period. The walnut has developed a wonderfully warm, mellow surface from over three centuries of careful use and polishing, giving the table real depth of character. Solid, stable and ready to use, it is ideal as a side table in a hallway, beside a chair or sofa as a lamp table, or as an accent piece in a bedroom or study. Made in England circa 1720, this is a highly decorative yet practical example of early walnut furniture, equally at home in a period setting or as a striking contrast in a contemporary interior, a true collector’s piece with charm and presence.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 18th century, a lowboy is a small table fitted with one or more drawers, traditionally used as a dressing table or side table during the reign of King George I.

Craftsmen primarily utilized native timbers such as walnut, oak, and fruitwood, frequently incorporating solid timber drawer linings, turned legs, and cast brass drop handles.

Authentic period pieces typically display hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate brass hardware, hand-turned baluster legs, and natural surface patination accumulated over centuries.

An antique lowboy serves effectively as an entryway console, a bedside table, or a compact side desk, bringing historical character and timber depth into contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually, taking care to keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources.
