Late 19th Century Volkstedt Porcelain Figures, German Pair

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely modelled pair of German porcelain figures depicting a galant scene with a young man and woman holding flowers, produced by Älteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik, Triebner, Ens & Co., in the late 19th century, when Volkstedt’s figure production was actively developed for the international export market. The figures are typical of Volkstedt’s genre output, designed for interior display rather than cabinet scale.

The modelling is controlled and confident, with well-rendered folds of drapery and carefully finished details. The palette is soft and balanced, dominated by pastel tones and discreet gilding. Both figures stand on rocaille bases with applied flowers.

The factory underglaze mark is present on the undersides and dates from approximately 1894 onward. Each figure bears the same impressed form number “66”, confirming original factory pairing.

The combination of scale, paired composition and clean condition makes this an unusually complete example within Volkstedt’s late 19th-century figure production.

Dimensions:

Female figure: height 26.7 cm, width 13 cm, depth 9.5 cm, weight 545 g

Male figure: height 24.3 cm, width 11 cm, depth 9 cm, weight 444 g

Condition:

Excellent antique condition. UV inspection shows no restorations or concealed damage. There is one small chip to a single applied leaf; otherwise, the figures are very well preserved.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Volkstedt porcelain originates from the Thuringia region of Germany, where the factory was established in 1762. Renowned for precise modelling and detailed hand-painted decoration, the manufacture became famous for producing pastoral figures, historic characters, and delicate floral work.

These figures were cast in multi-part plaster moulds using kaolin-rich hard-paste porcelain clay. Following initial firings, artisans applied glazes, enamels, and gilding before executing subsequent lower-temperature firings to fix the colours.

Authentic items typically display underglaze blue maker marks on the base, such as crowns, letters, or pitchfork symbols associated with Thuringian factories. Authentic examples also feature refined facial details, sharp moulding, and intricate applied decoration.

A pair of decorative figures works well positioned symmetrically on a mantelpiece, styled atop a stack of art books on a console table, or placed inside a glazed display cabinet to introduce historical texture.

Dust the surfaces gently with a soft dry camel-hair brush to prevent damage to delicate applied details. Avoid submersion in water, abrasive cloths, or harsh chemical cleaners that could strip gilding or unglazed enamel layers.
