Military Campaign Camphor Wood Circa 1890

19th century
Description

A superior campaign chest which would have been made in China for a high ranking officer or colonial administrator in the late 19th century.

This is an opportunity to buy a chest of this type at a reasonable price as it comes in unrestored original condition straight from a property and needs the writing surfaces to be replaced either with Baize or Leather. When the drawers are opened it still retains the original perfumed aroma of Camphor wood.

As can be seen in the illustration the central upper section has a pull out Secretaire drawer which folds over to form a writing surface fitted with various compartments and pigeon holes. Further images are available on request.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A military campaign chest is a modular piece of furniture built in two sections, constructed specifically to be dismantled and transported by officers during field operations in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Cabinetmakers used tropical hardwoods such as camphor wood, teak, and mahogany, which resisted timber warp and insect infestation in humid climates, finished with recessed brass mounts to prevent damage during transport.

Authentic campaign chests typically display a two-part split construction, flush-fitting brass drawer handles, brass corner protection, and carrying handles on the side panels.

Positioning a campaign chest in an entryway, bedroom, or home office introduces structured wooden textures, which contrast against neutral walls and contemporary decorative items.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, applying beeswax periodically, and placing the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
