Antique Oak Lowboy / Side Table - Mid 18th Century

18th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A charmingly naive George II oak lowboy with a rich aged patina. Featuring a two-piece top with a moulded edge over a single cock-beaded drawer which still retains a set of internal dividers. The drawer front is fitted with brass swan neck handles and a brass lock escutcheon. Raised on square tapered legs.

The overall condition is very good. We have had to replace the drawer slides and a portion of the cockbeading which had been lost to time. A delightfully simple example of mid-18th-century Georgian country house furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is an 18th-century term for a small table fitted with one or more drawers, designed primarily as a dressing table or side table in English homes during the Georgian period.

Mid-18th-century lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood, often joined with hand-cut dovetail joints and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetails on the drawer linings, genuine iron or brass fixings, and uneven wear or patination consistent with centuries of usage.

An antique oak lowboy functions as a hallway console table, bedside table, or focal side table, creating visual contrast when paired with contemporary art, ceramics, or lamps.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and moisture.
