Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

18th-century oak furniture is characterised by robust construction, hand-turned elements, and utilitarian design created during the Georgian era. These pieces often feature pegged joinery and rich natural patination from centuries of wax polishing.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid English oak assembled with mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden dowels or pegs. Drawers were hand-dovetailed, and legs were shaped using hand-operated wood lathes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-saw marks, irregular dovetail joints, original peg construction, and wear consistent with historical use. The timber should show natural shrinkage across the grain and deep patination in recessed areas.

Position the table in an entryway or living room to contrast against clean architectural lines and neutral walls. Combine the timber surfaces with modern ceramics, minimalist lamps, or simple botanical displays.

Apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the protective patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement or splitting.
