Exceptional French Kingwood Vernis Martin & Ormolu Mounted Vitrine Cabinet - In the Manner of François Linke

19th century
Description

This exceptional French vitrine cabinet exemplifies the highest level of late 19th to early 20th century Parisian cabinetmaking, executed in richly figured kingwood and adorned with exquisite gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, firmly in the manner of François Linke.

The cabinet is centred by a large glazed display section, flanked by glazed side panels, all framed by fine herringbone kingwood veneers. The lower panels are decorated with finely executed Vernis Martin painted scenes depicting romantic pastoral figures, a hallmark of luxury French furniture of this calibre.

The cabinet is raised on elegant cabriole legs terminating in finely cast ormolu mounts, with further elaborate gilt bronze ornamentation throughout, including floral swags, scrolling foliage, and a richly decorated frieze. The interior is lined in a refined blue fabric and fitted with adjustable glass shelves, making it ideal for the display of porcelain, sculpture, or fine collectibles.

This is a highly decorative and sophisticated piece, unmistakably influenced by the great Parisian masters, and would sit comfortably in both a classical interior or a refined contemporary setting seeking a statement work.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vernis Martin vitrine is a glazed display cabinet decorated with a specific French lacquering technique developed in the 18th century by the Martin brothers. These pieces often feature hand-painted romantic or pastoral scenes on the lower wooden panels beneath glass display shelves.

High-end French vitrines typically combine fine exotic wood veneers such as kingwood or rosewood with chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. They feature glazed glass panels, polished marble tops, and interior lining made from velvet or silk.

Authentic period vitrines feature hand-chased ormolu mounts with crisp detail, fine marquetry or parquetry veneering, and original glass panelling. The painted Vernis Martin sections will exhibit subtle craquelure consistent with age rather than modern printed imagery.

Place the cabinet as a focal point in a formal dining room, drawing room, or wide hallway to display collections of porcelain, glassware, or silver. Balance its ornate gilding by pairing it with neutral wall colours and simplified contemporary architectural elements.

Dust the wood veneer and glass regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth while keeping the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Clean the gilt-bronze mounts gently without harsh chemical polish, as abrasive cleaners can remove the original mercury gilding or patina.
