Regency Mahogany Tea Caddy with Cut Glass Bowl, C. 1820–1835

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An English Regency-period tea caddy constructed in mahogany with figured veneer panels, dating to circa 1820–1835. The rectangular body stands on turned bun feet and retains its original stepped lid and escutcheon.

The interior is fitted with two hinged tea compartments and a central circular aperture housing the original cut glass bowl, finely cut with geometric decoration. This arrangement reflects early 19th-century practice, combining secure tea storage with practical serving use.

The exterior veneers show attractive grain and a warm, well-developed patina. The caddy remains structurally sound and retains its original internal configuration.

Measurements

Height: 17 cm (6.7?)

Width: 30.5 cm (12.0?)

Depth: 16.5 cm (6.5?)

Weight: 1753 g

Condition

Sound antique condition. A longitudinal shrinkage crack is visible to the inner face of the lid and a further fine crack to the base. Small losses to veneer are present. These issues are consistent with age and do not detract from the overall appearance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency tea caddy is a specialised wooden box produced during the early 19th century to store and secure valuable loose tea leaves under lock and key.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood, featuring flame veneers, brass or ebony escutcheons, and interior foil linings or glass mixing bowls.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, natural timber shrinkage, original lock hardware, and subtle hand-planing marks on non-visible surfaces.

A historical caddy functions effectively as a decorative accent placed on a sideboard top, coffee table, or bookshelf to add texture and history to contemporary schemes.

Position the caddy away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood movement or veneer lifting, and wax the timber periodically with a neutral beeswax compound.
