Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle, this style emerged in 17th-century France and is characterised by complex inlay techniques combining tortoiseshell and cut metal, typically brass or pewter. The clocks feature baroque proportions, gilded bronze ormolu mounts, and classical figural finials.

Boulle marquetry utilizes a substrate veneer of natural tortoiseshell combined with cut sheet brass. The cases are further adorned with heavy cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, glass side panels, and enamel cartouche numerals set into a brass clock dial.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut metal scrollwork flush with the tortoiseshell substrate, naturally aged brass oxidation, and heavy hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts. Movement plates typically carry French maker stamps, serial numbers, or pendulum suspension mechanisms consistent with 18th or 19th-century manufacturing.

Place the clock as a focal piece on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or central entryway console table. Balancing the dark red and gold hues against neutral plaster walls or contemporary timber joinery highlights the detailed marquetry without overwhelming the space.

Maintain stable humidity and temperature to prevent the tortoiseshell from lifting or shrinking away from the metal inlay. Dust softly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid liquid solvents or chemical metal polishes on ormolu mounts, and consult a professional horologist for movement servicing.
