Significant Oil Painting Portrait of Louisa Cooke and Her Dog Mr Quiz

19th century
Description

Portrait of Louisa Cooke and “Mr. Quiz”

“Home Before Battle” — A Regency-Era Portrait with Trafalgar Provenance (circa 1802)

British Provincial School, in the manner of George Romney (1734–1802)

Subject and Medium

Portrait of Louisa Cooke and her dog “Mr. Quiz.”

A rare and intimate Regency-era portrait depicting Louisa Cooke in a white empire-line dress with red slippers, shown outdoors skipping with her named companion dog, Mr. Quiz, held on a lead. The image has an unusually personal domestic character and is closely associated with the Cooke family and the Trafalgar era.

Date: circa 1802

Medium: Oil on panel

Panel size: 26.6 cm × 20.3 cm

Composition and Technique

A poised full-length figure set within a softly atmospheric landscape. Louisa’s luminous white dress is positioned against a darker ground, creating strong figure-to-background contrast, while Mr. Quiz stands alertly at her side as a symbol of loyalty and domestic steadiness. The composition is figure-led, typical of refined provincial portrait practice around 1800, with careful attention to costume detail and a direct, quietly expressive gaze. The restrained modelling and sincere, unforced finish align with the wider Regency portrait idiom associated with the Romney generation.

Louisa Cooke and “Mr. Quiz”

Mr. Quiz is not merely an appealing detail—he is documented by name in family correspondence. In 1805, Captain John Cooke wrote to Louisa:

“I hope Mr Quiz is very well… and that you don’t intend to take him to Exeter with you. I think you should leave him at home to guard the House.”

This elevates the portrait into a rare category: a historically anchored likeness with a verifiable personal narrative, where sitter and companion animal are preserved in both paint and letter.

Historical Significance

Louisa Cooke was the wife—and later widow—of Captain John Cooke, RN (1762–1805), commander of HMS Bellerophon, celebrated for its conspicuous role at the Battle of Trafalgar. Captain Cooke was killed during the action. Bellerophon later gained enduring fame as the ship upon which Napoleon surrendered.

This portrait captures the other side of history: the home front. It offers a quiet, emotionally resonant counterpoint to the epic narrative of naval warfare, with the additional appeal of documentary depth.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian portraiture typically features sitters portrayed in full or three-quarter length against naturalistic landscapes or architectural backgrounds. Artworks from this period frequently depict subjects holding symbolic items or accompanied by family pets to convey status and narrative context.

Artists during this period primarily applied oil pigments onto stretched flax linen or hemp canvas. Frames were constructed from timber carved or layered with composition mouldings, subsequently finished with water gilding using gold leaf over reddish bole clay.

Authentic works from this era display natural craquelure patterns across the oil paint layer corresponding to age and canvas movement. Examination of the reverse usually reveals hand-cut timber stretchers, original hand-forged tacks, and aged, darkened canvas fibres.

A framed period portrait functions as a focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece or sideboard in both traditional and modern interiors. The warm tones of gilding contrast effectively against dark painted feature walls or neutral textured backdrops.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and strong heat sources to prevent canvas warping and pigment degradation. Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft brush rather than liquid cleaners to preserve the delicate gold leaf layer.
