Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th century Victorian chests of drawers typically feature solid hardwood construction, commonly using mahogany or walnut. Design details often include turned wooden handles, rounded corner profiles, plinth bases, and functional additions such as raised rear galleries.

Cabinetmakers during this period utilised hand-cut dovetail joints for drawer construction, solid pine or oak as secondary drawer linings, and flame mahogany veneers over solid timber frameworks. Handles were frequently turned from matching mahogany or cast in brass.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetails with uneven spacing, cast brass or steel keyhole escutcheons, and natural shrinkage marks in the wood drawer bottoms. Original backboards generally show hand-sawn timber marks and uniform aging.

Position the piece against neutral or deeply saturated wall tones to contrast the rich timber finish. The galleried top provides a structured surface for displaying framed artwork, ceramics, or contemporary table lamps.

Apply high-grade beeswax polish along the grain twice a year to preserve the lustre and protect the timber. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent surface veneer lifting or timber warping.
