Rosewood Campaign Box C.1820

18th century
Description

A distinguished example of early 19th-century campaign craftsmanship, this Georgian rosewood box circa 1820 presents beautifully with its rich, dark patina and striking brass-bound accents. Designed for durability and elegance, the brass corner strapping and central escutcheon not only enhance its visual appeal but also reflect its original purpose as a travelling officer’s or gentleman’s companion piece.

The lid opens to reveal an inviting interior lined in vibrant green lining with a pleated satin lid panel—an attractive survival of period workmanship. Inside sits a well-fitting, lift-out tray, offering practical tiered storage and allowing the box to function as both a document and personal effects chest.

Condition: No key and the brass escutcheon to the front isn't inlaid to perfection.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A campaign box is a portable wooden container designed for military officers to store personal items while travelling on military operations during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These boxes were constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany and fitted with flush brass corners, straps, and handles to endure rough transport.

Authentic pieces feature inset metal hardware mounted flush with the timber surface, hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron or brass locks, and subtle surface oxidisation on the brasswork.

Display the piece on a desk, bookshelf, or console table to add historical texture while serving as discreet storage for small desktop items.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to avoid timber shrinkage, and clean the brass gently using a dry microfibre cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
