Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Crafted during the reign of King George II in mid-18th-century Britain, these boxes were manufactured as portable storage containers for valuables, correspondence, or personal accessories. Imported rosewood was favoured for its dense grain and durability, making it a prominent material among high-end cabinetmakers of the era.

Boxes from this period typically utilized solid exotic timbers such as rosewood or mahogany, often set with hand-cast brass hardware. Construction methods relied on dovetail joinery, hand-carved key escutcheons, and polished brass protective corner straps.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, slight irregularities in hand-forged screws, and natural oxidisation on internal iron or brass fittings. The presence of shrinkage lines in the timber and wear patterns around the keyhole and base also indicate original 18th-century manufacture.

A Georgian box functions well as a decorative accent on a writing desk, coffee table, or console surface. It provides functional concealed storage for small contemporary items while adding historical character and rich wood tones to a room schema.

To preserve the wood, keep the item away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Clean the wood using a high-grade beeswax polish applied with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive metal cleaners on original patinated brass fittings.
