Antique Ushak Rug

19th century
Description

Woven in the late 19th century this is a rare blue/grey toned antique Ushak rug, with gold tones, soft pinks and reds, we can even see some sage greens in the design.

The design is lovely and open and very easy on the eye, with stylised large floral palmettes and the simplistic vine border pattern.  The weave on Ushak rugs is generally rather coarse using bigger knotting than Persian rugs, as the wool is extremely soft, with a good pile height on this rug.  Some minimal lower pile in places, but still a very durable and decorative rug -  we supply excellent anti-slip underlay with every rug we sell, this aids their durability stopping them from moving and creasing on the floor, thus protecting them.

Oushak rugs or Ushak depending on the spelling preference, were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire.  Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and soft dyes are not uncommon.  Often younger Ushak rugs will be rich red in colour and use bolder geometric designs.

Book in a showroom visit to see this rug up close soon, or request a home visit we travel all over the UK showing our rugs to customers and interior designers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the town of Usak in western Turkey during the Ottoman period, Ushak rugs are renowned for their large-scale floral and medallion patterns, soft colour palettes, and silky wool quality.

Traditional Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a wool or cotton foundation, employing the Ghiordes, or Turkish, symmetrical knot technique.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool with natural dye abrash colour variation, soft geometricised botanical motifs, a supple handle, and subtle knotting variations typical of hand weaving.

The muted pastel and warm terracotta tones of an Ushak rug anchor neutral interior schemes, providing textured contrast alongside modern furniture or classic timber pieces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, place a quality underlay pad beneath to reduce friction wear, and clean spills promptly using cold water and absorbent cloth.
