Antique Ushak Rug

Description

A beautiful very pale and rare antique Ushak rug in lovely original condition, the palette of dyes used are extremely rare to find, more often Ushak or (Oushak's) were woven in larger sizes and in warmer colours.  As this rug is from the late 19th century the dyes have faded and the abstract floral design is quite spectacular.  With a golden yellow border and warm brick reds, it balances beautifully with the natural ivory/grey toned wool main background colour.  The rug is original condition with no damage or issues to report, a rare and collectable decorative item.

Ushak carpets originate from the town of Usak in Western Anatolia, Turkey, a major centre of carpet production since the Ottoman era. They are historically recognised for their larger-scale floral designs and soft, luminous wool.

Authentic antique Ushak carpets are woven with hand-spun wool yarn on a wool or cotton foundation. The dyes are derived from natural vegetable sources, yielding soft tones of terracotta, ochre, soft grey, and cream.
