Antique Angora Ushak Rug

19th century
Description

A rich red late 19th century antique Angora Ushak rug, woven in a small town in Western Anatolia, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora rugs. The late 19th century weavers came from villages outside of Ushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation.  This is why Ushak's have a soft and loose feel and their designs are more often very open.

Woven with amazing teal blue/greens, rich reds and golden tones, and off-white non dyed wool, the natural dyes are quite stunning! There is some lower areas of pile and wear on this ancient Turkish rug, which in many ways adds immense character and interest.  Supplied with our excellent sturdy underlay it would be a beautiful rug for the floor.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the city of Usak in Western Anatolia, these rugs are renowned for their distinct knotting techniques, large-scale floral or medallion patterns, and vibrant colour palettes historically favoured in European interiors.

These carpets are hand-knotted using soft Angora goat wool spun for the pile, knotted onto a sturdy wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, providing a plush texture and subtle sheen.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-bound selvedges, natural dye variations known as abrash, slight irregularities in weave density, and characteristic geometric medallion motifs framed by wide decorative borders.

A vibrant red oriental carpet acts as an anchoring element in contemporary spaces, creating contrast when placed alongside modern neutral upholstery, polished timber flooring, or minimalist furniture.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting to protect the pile fibres, rotate the carpet annually to balance foot traffic exposure, and engage specialist textile conservators for periodic deep cleaning.
