Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian silver table is a specialised form of 18th-century English occasional table designed primarily to display and hold silver tea services, beverage vessels, and valuable metalware. Characterised by a raised tray-top rim or gallery to prevent items from slipping off, these tables were popularised during the reign of King George II and III.

Traditional silver tables were constructed using dense imported timbers, predominantly dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany. Construction techniques include hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-carved cabriole legs, moulded gallery borders, and hand-planed secondary woods such as oak or pine for internal framing.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit signs of hand craftsmanship, such as irregular drawer dovetails, original shrinkage splits along timber grain, and natural oxidisation on the underside of the woodwork. They typically feature original period proportions, early pad feet or claw-and-ball feet, and age-consistent wear to the finish.

In contemporary interiors, a silver table serves effectively as an occasional side table beside formal seating, a hallway console for displaying small ceramics, or an accent piece in a reading corner. Its raised tray top provides functional surface structure while adding warm mahogany tones to neutral decorative schemes.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity variations to prevent timber warping or veneer separation.
