Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide, decorative mirror designed specifically to hang or sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were intended to capture light from nearby chandeliers and candles, amplifying illumination while serving as a central focal point in a room.

In the 19th century, frames were typically crafted from solid woods such as oak, pine, or lime, which were carved or adorned with detailed composition mouldings (compo). A layer of gesso was applied to smooth the surface before thin sheets of gold leaf were oil-gilded or water-gilded onto the frame, followed by heavy plate glass mirrors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age-related wear, such as subtle cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, gentle rubbing away of the gold leaf showing red or grey clay bolus underneath, and minor foxing or dark spots on the mirror glass. The back of the frame usually features rough-sawn timber planks fastened with aged iron nails.

A large gilded mirror provides visual contrast when placed against contemporary paint schemes or minimalist architectural backdrop. Resting the piece above a fireplace, console table, or directly on the floor brings structure and reflects natural light, making smaller or darker spaces feel expanded.

Gilded finishes are delicate and soluble in water; light dusting with a dry, soft-bristled artist brush or microfiber cloth is recommended. Avoid liquid cleaners, polish, or water on the frame, and clean the glass glass surface carefully by spraying cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly on the mirror.
