Pair of mid 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze warriors, Romulus and Titus Tatius after Jaques-Louis David’s painting of ‘The Intervention of the Sabine Women’ completed in 1799 and now on permanent display in the Louvre in Paris. These great historical works of art were a must see on the Grand Tour of the 19th century. Presented on their original Sienna marble slab bases. Possibly a matched pair. France, circa 1850.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy European aristocrats undertook the Grand Tour across Italy and France. Craftsmen created small bronze reductions of famous ancient and Neoclassical statues, such as those after Jacques-Louis David, to sell as souvenir art objects.

These figures were cast in bronze using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chasing to refine details. They were typically given a dark brown or chemical patina and mounted onto rectangular plinths of Siena or Nero Marquina marble.
