Mahogany Cheval Mirror C.1840

19th century
Description

Lovely mid 19th.c. mahogany cheval or dressing mirror on stand c.1840. Original 17.5" x 29" mirror plate within a crossbanded mahogany frame. Angle adjustable on a superb turned and block stand with turned finials, tightening knobs to hold the mirror in place and twin turned stretchers. Over rectangular plinths with moulded quarter round brackets and turned roundels at the ends front and rear. Raised on turned bun feet with the original brass castors recessed below. Some tarnish to the mirror plate which could be replaced with new glass if preferred. Otherwise excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Developed in the late 18th century, a cheval mirror (or psyche mirror) is a full-length dressing glass suspended within a frame on two vertical uprights. The design allows the glass to pivot, giving a full view of ones outfit, and became a staple of Regency and Victorian dressing rooms.

Cheval mirrors from the 19th century were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. They incorporated mercury-silvered plate glass, brass pivot knobs, and turned stretchers resting on a dual trestle base with castors.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned columns, period-correct brass adjustment screws, joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, and original silvered glass that often exhibits slight light spotting or foxing consistent with age.
