Description

A rare pair of miniature tankards made of Old Sheffield Plate. Both marked to the base for the Bell mark of Roberts Smith & Co, Sheffield c1828. Beautifully gilded to the interiors and with unusual shaped handles.

In good condition with very slight copper bleed to the raised edges, with slight discolouration to the interiors.

Total weight approx 300g.

Span approx 8.5cm

Old Sheffield Plate was developed in the mid-18th century following Thomas Boulsovers discovery that sterling silver and copper could be fused together under heat and pressure. This technique allowed manufacturers to produce durable silverware at a fraction of the cost of solid silver until electroplating replaced it in the 1840s.
