Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ware produced in the Arita area and shipped from the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gilding, and enamel decoration.

Traditional Imari ceramics utilise hard-paste porcelain kaolin clay fired at high temperatures, featuring underglaze cobalt blue painting, overglaze polychrome enamels, and liquid gold accents applied in subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentication involves examining spur marks on the base, irregularities in hand-drawn cobalt brushwork, wear on overglaze gilding, and the presence of slight greyish tones or pinholes in the porcelain glaze.
