Description

An elegant and well-preserved pair of Japanese Satsuma vases from the Kyoto school, dating from c. 1900–1915 (late Meiji to early Taisho). Each vase bears the impressed mark of Tagawa (??), a documented Kyoto painter celebrated for refined compositions and high craftsmanship.

The form is gracefully ovoid, rising to a narrow neck with a softly flared rim. Around the shoulder, a brocade-style border of alternating lappets and scalework bands is painted in enamel colours of blue, green, and red, all heightened in gold. The main decoration features cascades of wisteria blossoms in soft lilac and ivory tones, accented with minute gilt detailing. Thousands of dots and linear gold accents capture the shimmer of spring light filtering through petals. The effect is decorative yet restrained, exemplifying Kyoto’s cultivated aesthetic at the turn of the century.

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century and evolved into an export commodity during the Meiji period. Characterised by cream-coloured earthenware with detailed hand-painted enamelling and gilding, production expanded to major centres such as Kyoto and Yokohama to satisfy international demand.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from light-coloured earthenware body clay covered in a clear glaze that develops a fine micro-crackle network upon cooling. Artisans apply polychrome overglaze enamels and gold leaf or paint, which are then fired at lower temperatures to fix the painted decoration.

Authentic Satsuma display a distinct crackle-glazed cream ground, soft earthenware body rather than hard porcelain, and delicate raised enamel work with gilded details. Many authentic export pieces from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries bear maker marks, workshop signatures, or shimazu crests painted on the base.

These decorative ceramic pieces work effectively as focal points on mantels, sideboards, or console tables in contemporary or traditional spaces. Grouping them as a symmetrical pair or displaying them alongside natural wood finishes creates a balanced visual composition.
