Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

A George III chest on chest secretaire, also known as a tallboy, is an 18th-century double-carcase storage piece where a upper chest sits atop a wider lower chest, incorporating a fall-front or pull-out drawer fitted as a writing desk.

Cabinetmakers during the Georgian period primarily utilized solid and veneered mahogany for visible surfaces, with secondary woods such as pine or oak for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, drawer bottoms with grain running from front to back, original cast brass hardware, and a construction split into two distinct upper and lower sections for transport.

Place the piece as a focal point in a home office or living room, contrasting its dark wood tones against understated neutral walls and contemporary artwork.

Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, and apply high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish.
