Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Imari porcelain originated in the Arita area of Japan and was exported to Europe starting in the 17th century through the port of Imari. The style gained popularity for its rich decoration combining cobalt blue underglaze with iron-red overglaze and gilt detailing, often featuring Japanese floral and animal motifs suited for Western dining rooms and cabinets.

These plates were crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures to achieve durability. Cobalt oxide was applied first to create the blue underglaze design before the initial firing, followed by enamel iron-red paint and gold leaf gilding in secondary overglaze firings.

Authentic 19th-century Imari pieces display characteristic underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamelling. Look for minor hand-painted irregularities, slight spur marks or unglazed foot rims underneath, and subtle surface wear on the gilding consistent with historical age.

Imari plates are commonly arranged in decorative wall galleries, displayed inside glazed cabinets, or mounted on plate racks above sideboards. Their high-contrast navy blue and terracotta red palette pairs seamlessly with both dark wood joinery and neutral contemporary backdrops.

Wash Imari porcelain gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or modern dishwashers that can wear away delicate overglaze enamels and gilding. Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth.
