Description

Superb hand painted Japanese Amari plate in excellent condition. This vibrant plate has a floral design surrounding a circular centre depicting flowers in a Chinese vase. To the reverse of the plate there is hand-painted motifs around the rim. This is an attractive plate wonderfully painted with vivid red, blue and gold coloured decoration that will make a lovely accent piece in a wide range of settings.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ware produced around the town of Arita in the former Hizen Province. Characterised by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and gold gilding, it was originally shipped through the port of Imari to European markets from the seventeenth century onwards.

Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay kaolinized kaolin stone, fired at high temperatures to achieve a hard porcelain body. The production involves a two-stage firing process: first underglaze cobalt blue is applied and fired, followed by overglaze enamel colours and gold leaf embellishments fired at a lower temperature.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle unevenness in hand-painted details, firing spur marks on the underside, and minor age-related wear to the gold gilding. The iron red enamels often exhibit slight dimensional texture on the glazed surface, alongside characteristic blue-tinted clear glazes typical of historic Arita kilns.

Imari porcelain plates serve as ideal architectural accents when mounted in symmetrical wall arrangements above sideboards or consoles. They can also be displayed on acrylic or brass plate stands within glass-fronted cabinets and bookshelves to add colour and historical texture.

Dust gently using a soft microfiber cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent scratching the overglaze enamels and gilding. Avoid using abrasive chemical cleaners, harsh detergents, or immersion in hot water, as temperature fluctuations can cause glaze crazing and damage fragile surface decorations.
