Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and exported from the port of Imari starting in the seventeenth century. Recognized for its distinctive palette, traditional Imari combines underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamel and gold leaf accents.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The decoration involves a primary firing for the underglaze cobalt blue pigment, followed by secondary lower-temperature firings to set the overglaze iron-red enamel and gilded details.

Authentic eighteenth-century Imari pieces typically exhibit spur marks on the underside from kiln supports, slight irregularities in hand-painted motifs, and a bluish-grey tinge in the white glaze base. The cobalt blue often shows tonal variation where applied by hand beneath the glaze.
