Description

A refined matched pair of Japanese export vases by Tashiro (??), Yokohama, c. 1920–30s. The elegant ovoid forms are worked in ivory-toned earthenware with a fine, even craquelure and enriched with overglaze enamels and superb gilding. Midnight-blue bands divide two alternating scenes: a mountainous landscape with pagodas among pines, and a lavish chrysanthemum garden with butterflies. Painting is crisp and confident; gilding at rims, shoulders and footrings is immaculate with a soft kirabiki sheen. Bases bear the clear red TASHIRO cartouche.
