Burr Walnut

refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.

Ormolu - (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'.

The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table that originated in 17th-century France. Designed with an open knee space and frieze drawers, it served as both a functional desk and a central decorative element in formal reception rooms and studies.

19th-century French writing tables frequently feature native or imported hardwood frames layered with figured veneers such as burr walnut or kingwood. Tops are often finished with embossed leather writing skivers, while decorative corners and feet are reinforced with cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts.

Authentic Louis XV Revival pieces, prominent during the late 19th century, are identified by serpentine contours, cabriole legs, and symmetrical brass or bronze ormolu fittings. Construction details like hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers and original natural patination on wood and metal mounts also indicate period authenticity.

A French writing table can function as a standalone executive desk in a home office or as a console table in a spacious hallway. Positioning the table away from walls allows its detailed wood grain and metal mounts to be viewed from all angles.

Maintain burr walnut surfaces by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax occasionally to protect the veneer finish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on brass mounts, as original gilding or oxidisation patination should be preserved rather than polished away.
