Pair of Large French Porcelain Figures, Vion Et Baury Style, C. 1870

Description

A fine pair of large Paris hard-paste porcelain figures depicting an 18th-century musical courtship. The gentleman toasts with a raised cup while the lady plays a lute; the Rococo grace, satin-finished complexions, delicate enamels and gilt highlights are all consistent with the best Vieux Paris work in the Vion et Baury tradition. The gentleman’s cup carries raised letters “L” and “h,” most likely an internal assembly code for l’homme used when producing companion figures.

A rare period label “G. F. Webber from France 1871” remains to the bases, confirming export via the celebrated Boston dealer to a high-end American clientele and placing manufacture slightly earlier, c. 1868–1870. As is customary for elite Paris workshops of the period, the figures are unmarked. A highly decorative, documented pair of museum calibre.
