18th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A decorative pair of late 18th-century Meissen porcelain figures depicting a seated boy and girl, each accompanied by a dog. Executed in the pastoral genre popular in Saxony at the time, the figures are modelled with gentle movement and a calm domestic character. Both figures are seated on low stools above circular bases with enamelled borders and restrained gilding. The boy is shown with a firearm resting beside him, while the girl holds a framed mirror angled towards her dog. The figures are decorated in soft polychrome enamels with floral-patterned garments. Underglaze blue crossed-swords marks are present to the bases, consistent with Meissen production of the period. Vent holes are visible to the undersides.

Dimensions:

Boy: height 15 cm; width 10 cm; depth 10.5 cm; weight 337 g.

Girl: height 15 cm; width 8 cm; depth 10 cm; weight 374 g.

Condition:

Boy: a small loss to the tip of the firearm; the right hand appears to have been retouched, based on colour difference; otherwise good antique condition.

Girl: no visible breaks or restorations; good antique condition.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced in Saxony, 18th-century Meissen figures are celebrated for pioneering European hard-paste porcelain, featuring precise hand-moulding, vibrant overglaze enamel painting, and detailed costuming reflecting Rococo and Neoclassical design.

These figures were fashioned from hard-paste kaolin clay, hand-moulded in separate sections, assembled with liquid slip, high-fired, and subsequently decorated with hand-applied enamel colours and gilding before a final firing.

Authentic period pieces typically display the hand-painted crossed swords mark in cobalt blue underglaze on the base, alongside incised model numbers, press marks, and distinctive period painting techniques.

Displaying porcelain figure groups within a glazed cabinet, on a mantlepiece, or atop a console table alongside contemporary elements creates a sophisticated contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust figures regularly using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft artist brush; avoid soaking in water or using abrasive chemicals, as moisture can damage delicate gilding or existing conservation repairs.
