Late 18th C. Chinese Chippendale-style Mahogany Kettle Stand / Lamp Table

18th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A wonderful early 19th-century mahogany kettle stand. After Chippendale and very much in the Chinese Chippendale style.

The square top features a serpentine carved gallery rail above gadrooned edging, raised on four slender triple column supports united by a twin column X-form stretcher and terminating on carved feet.

Overall condition is excellent. Some historic repairs to the gallery, but nothing that detracts from this delightfully delicate example of 19th-century furniture design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised in the mid-to-late eighteenth century by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, Chinese Chippendale style incorporates East Asian motifs, fretwork, clustered column legs, and pagoda-inspired gallery edges into traditional British mahogany furniture.

Eighteenth-century kettle stands were predominantly crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its fine grain, strength, and dark finish, often supported by hand-carved legs and pegged joinery.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, irregular hand-carved details, evidence of timber shrinkage over time, original oak or pine secondary woods, and a natural aged patina on the mahogany surface.

A tall kettle stand works effectively as a slender accent table beside low seating, a pedestal for displaying ceramic vases or indoor plants, or a sculptural feature within a hallway alcove.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, while avoiding direct heat sources and excessive moisture exposure.
