Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced around the town of Arita and shipped via the port of Imari. Originating in the seventeenth century, it is characterised by its distinctive palette of cobalt blue underglaze combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding.

Authentic Imari porcelain is crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to create a dense porcelain body. Cobalt blue patterns are painted under the glaze prior to the initial firing, followed by iron-red enamels and gold leaf painted over the glaze for subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces typically display minor hand-painted irregularities, subtle spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, and gradual surface wear to the overglaze gilding. The unglazed foot rim often shows slight discolouration from age and contact with kiln shelves.
