Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics made in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gilding.

Crafted from kaolin clay, these pieces underwent a high-temperature primary firing for the underglaze cobalt blue before overglaze enamel colours and gold leaf accents were applied and fired in secondary kilns.

Authentic historical pieces often display slight glaze irregularities, spur marks on the underside from kiln supports, slight wear to the gilding, and specific colour palettes including deep cobalt blue and iron-red.

These decorative ceramics are frequently mounted on plate stands atop sideboards, displayed within glazed cabinets, or hung on feature walls to serve as structural focal points.

Clean gently with warm water and mild detergent using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals, dishwasher use, or prolonged soaking that could degrade surface gilding.
