An Imari charger is a large decorative porcelain platter originally produced in the Arita region of Japan and exported through the port of Imari. These pieces are characterised by intricate hand-painted designs featuring underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gilding, and polychrome enamels.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The signature palette relies on underglaze cobalt blue applied before firing, followed by detailed overglaze enamel painting in iron-red rust tones, green, and gold leaf gilding before a final low-temperature firing.

Authentic period Imari ceramics typically feature slight irregularities in the hand-scalloped rims, foot rim spur marks from kiln firing, and soft wear to the overglaze red and gold enamelling. The cobalt blue underglaze often shows subtle variation in tone and depth compared to modern transfer-printed reproductions.

Large porcelain chargers can be displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece, or mounted securely on a focal wall within a gallery arrangement. The contrast of cobalt blue and iron red adds visual depth to both traditional dark wood and minimalist light interior backgrounds.

Wash carefully by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that could strip delicate overglaze gilding. Ensure the piece is thoroughly dried with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid using plate hangers with unprotective metal springs.
