FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. Characterised by rich underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gold enamelling, these decorative pieces became highly sought after in Europe from the late seventeenth century onwards.

These chargers were formed from dense kaolin clay, painted first with cobalt oxide underglaze, fired at high temperatures, and then decorated with overglaze iron-red, orange, and gilt enamels before undergoing a secondary lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical panel designs, hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue variations, visible brush strokes in the enamel, spurred firing marks on the underside, and age-consistent wear to the gilded highlights.

An Imari charger can be displayed on a plate stand atop a dark wood sideboard, mounted on a focal wall within a plate gallery, or placed on a fireplace mantelpiece to add vibrant colour and texture to modern or eclectic schemes.

Clean porcelain chargers gently using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or immersion, as these can strip delicate overglaze gilding and enamelling.
