Stunning & Rare Fine Victorian Satinwood Embellished Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

An outstanding quality Victorian satinwood five drawer chest of drawers, attributed to Lambs of Manchester.

C1870.

The decoration on this extremely scarce and unique chest is completely fabulous and extremely abundant. Having embossed and many different hand painted designs throughout. To the top are intricate fruiting grape-vines, banded with acanthus leaves to the rounded corner edge. Lower down the chest the drawer dividers are decorated with pretty painted floral designs. The rounded corners to the chest are even more delightful having an intricate wheat sheaf design. The satinwood drawer fronts are banded with beautifully figured inlaid rosewood, which contrasts so very well with the lighter satinwood. The satinwood to the top and drawer fronts have also been embellished with a hand pained design, having a "birds eye maple" figured pattern

The chest has been attributed to Lambs of Manchester because of its outstanding quality and very similar design to other pieces from this cabinet maker.

Founded by James Lamb around 1840, Lambs of Manchester emerged as one of the most successful British cabinet makers of the late nineteenth century. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship, they collaborated with several notable designers, enhancing their reputation in the field of furniture design.

All the original brass locks and escutcheons are present.

The original turned bun handles are also decorated to the centres.

Standing on a rounded corner plinth base.

Wonderful rich colour, warmth and character to this very desirable chest.

In excellent antique condition. Wear and patina appropriate with age.

Very solid sturdy and strong.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the nineteenth century, these pieces feature light golden satinwood veneers, classic two-over-three drawer configurations, and refined cabinetmaking techniques typical of the Victorian era.

Craftsmen utilised hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber carcasses overlaid with fine satinwood veneers, and crossbanded borders fitted with brass locks and turned wooden handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetailing, original full-mortise brass locks, uneven hand-sawn drawer linings, and natural age-related patination across the timber surfaces.

Position the piece in a main bedroom or entrance hallway as a focal point, pairing its warm golden tones with neutral wall palettes and contemporary decorative accessories.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating sources, dusting regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and applying clear beeswax annually to maintain the surface lustre.
